Has anyone else been watching the new show on CBS, "Mike and Molly"? It's about two overweight people (she's a teacher) who find love when they meet at an OA meeting. It's actually gotten pretty good reviews, but the first episode was disappointing. Acting not great, too many fat jokes, very predictable. I don't even know why I've watched since (it's on late, maybe - I am pooped by then and sitting on the couch!) but it has gotten better. Still not fantastic, but better.
But I hate the mom character, as played by Swoosie Kurtz. She plays her like she's always drunk with some weird accent. Plus, some of the things she says are foul! I'm not a priss, but wow! It kind of grosses me out.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone else is watching and what you think.
I've been watching and thinking the same thoughts as you. It seems they toned done on the fat jokes so maybe they'll tone down mom as well. The sister is a little too dumb for my taste also. The supporting characters are very shallow in my opinion. What I have liked is the two main actors, their relationship, etc. I wish the show would revolve more around just them and leave the others out.
The supporting characters are very shallow in my opinion.
That's exactly it. They are shallow and caricature-like. It doesn't work. I start to like it (I do like the main characters) and then they have the supporting characters on and that about ruins it for me.
I agree with the OP. I like the main characters and the basic storyline; but I can't stand Molly's mom or sister, Mike's policeman partner ( Carl ? ) or Mike's mom. Molly's mom ( Swoosie Kurtz ) is definitely the most irritating / offensive to me, though.
The character of his partner's grandma is good / funny / likeable, but her voice irritates me too...
I'm home during the day and watch the new talk show, "The Talk". It has Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Sara Gilbert, and Leah Remini. Anyway, they featured a Marie Claire article in which the author bashed Mike and Molly saying it was repulsive to watch the two fat people and she got grossed out. She claims that no one wants to watch it, etc. Needless to say, the next day she issued an apology. It was interesting.
I sort of like Molly's sense of humor. She is level headed and resilient. Some of the storylines are a bit magnified, but I enjoy the series. It nice to watch a show where a teacher has a life outside of school.
happened to Swoosie Kurtz??? I used to love everything she did--but she looks--odd--is the only word I can think of. Too thin maybe???bad cosmetic surgery???? But I agree--her vocab. is foul and last night I actually changed the channel when she started to talk about sex. and yes it takes alot to get to me...
I love the show! The 2 main characters are my favorite. I also like Carl's mom. The other characters are too cartoonish, especially Swoosie Kurtz. I think there a worse shows on the air, more graphic and on earlier than the 9:30 time slot. I feel like the time slot is good for this show. How I Met Your Mother and Rules of Engagement are on too early for the subject matter on the shows.
I read about that article in Marie Claire; it was sooooo offensive!
I couldn't believe they actually published it! Anyway, I've read about a lot of people who are cancelling their Marie Claire subscriptions because of it. I felt it took bigotry to a whole new level! Yuck!
I love Mike and Molly. I watched because I liked Billy Gardell on Yes, Dear and I loved Melissa McCarthy on Samantha, Who?
I knew we'd continue watching when DH was laughing throughout the entire first episode.
As for the Marie Claire article, it was actually a blog post, which is why I think it got published. I felt her apology was contrived too. Someone once told me that overweight people are the one society (not the right word) that its still ok to discriminate against (and make fun of). Thought it was interesting.
I think the main characters are kind of sweet. While Mike can be a bit of an over-sensitive jerk, I think Molly's really funny and it's nice to watch them get to know each other. BUT the supporting characters (and a lot of the writing!) are so obnoxious as to make the show unwatchable. Last time I tried to watch, Mike's best friend was making some really tasteless and offensive comments about strippers...something about wanting to see "bald eagles" and how if they didn't want to take their clothes off in front of strangers, maybe they should have finished high school. I turned it off and haven't watched it again since.
