This is what we do with or 4, now 3, 1st grade classes. We would each have a country, do projects, lessons, videos, whatever,... and then for 23 days our class would present and teach the other classes about their country. So my class would only do ENgland, bt would learn from the other students about Mexico, Italy and Germany. For England I start with where is it, color the map and flag. Then we compare and contrast traditions and how the traditions from England are our traditions in America now. They love this unit and being able to teach the other classes.

We also have the whole first grade participate. Each child has a little "passport". Each teacher picks a different country or region and the classes will rotate to each teacher. We'll do a lesson and a little craft or game.
I teach about holiday traditions in France.

Germany: My students decorate a paper pickle (in Germany they hide the ornament in the tree and the first to find gets an extra present) with a google eye, santa hat and cotton ball pulled apart for a beard and hat trim, with small white pompom on hat.
I also read The Cobweb Christmas (how tinsil came to be put on the xmas tree)

Mexico: make a homemade pinata with students help and fill with candy.

I also print Christmas phrases in the different languages and play music as well.

We do the passports as well. Great fun! Enjoy.

I have some free things for this on my site. I'll be using it for my 1st and 2nd graders this year to wrap up a unit on maps and location at our Christmas Party! www.bainbridgeclass.com

Here is the link for Mrs. Bainbridge's class: http://www.bainbridgeclass.com/files.htm

My coteacher and I used her passport as an example (made our own in Publisher). We added a few countries also. We made suitcases out of large pieces of construction paper. We glued a world map to the suitcase. The students will place a Christmas dot sticker on each country visited. I made stamps for each country we will visit. The students will either glue them in their passport or on the suitcase. I attached the stamps.
