Valentine Mailbox HELP!
Old 01-08-2007, 03:52 PM

I know it's a bit early but I would like to get my kids started on their Valentine Mailboxes. I looped with my class and last year they had a homework assignment for two weeks to decorate a mailbox for their Valentine cards. They had to use recyclable objects for tehir mailbox and they must be well decorated.I handed out awards after the passing out the cards for all the different kinds of mailboxes. They come out so cute. Well, this year is here and I can't have them do the same thing so my question is does anyone have their students make something else that they wouldn't mind sharing. I would like something that they can do at home for homework. Thanks!

I don't usually do anything to fancy- just have them decorate white lunch bags. I bet some could get really creative at home though! I usually give my students glitter, construction paper, and other craft scraps and let them go nuts.

My kids will staple a whole paper plate to a half paper plate and add a few hearts, etc. Nothing that would take two weeks- maybe 30 minutes.

Valentine bags as well

I usually use regular lunch bags and as a station, they get to decorate them however they would like. I do first thing in the AM. The only requirement I make is to be sure have them name clearly written.

I've done it the past 3 years and it has worked. Last year I did have a problem though. I had a larger (and more generous classe) who brought in candies and goodie bags so our lunch bags by the end was worse to wear with all the weight.

Love the idea of using shoe boxes or sort but can't count on the kids to bring them in. Anyone have any ideas?

I used to use shoe boxes. I went to a shoe store and got donations. Now we have regular mailboxes so we just use those.

Valentine's Mailboxes

I have my kids cut two large hearts out of construction paper. They cut the top off one heart then staple the two hearts together. It makes a kind of pocket. They then use a strip of white paper to write their name on and glue that to the front. It is simple and holds up fairly well. I got the idea from my mom who has been doing that with her classroom for over 20 years.

One year I found a mailbox template and my class made their own mailboxes. I bet you could find one on line. It took my class forever to make them, that is why I did not do it again. It would be a great take home project and I bet you would get some very creative boxes. We made them out of white card stock.

Each year I have my kids make Valentine Mailboxes out of a cereal box cut in half. I have them cover the box with paper and decorate it as they wish.
