Racism....current events HELP!

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how you would have Grade 1 students present a short storybook on racism (The Crayon Box that Talked). Assuming the child could read, they could do a read aloud to their peers. Any other ideas?

Synopsis of book: A girl finds a box of crayons that can’t get along. After hearing them express their dislike for one another, the girl decides to buy the crayons and draw a picture using all of the colours. The crayons learn that although they are many different colours, each one is unique. The crayons discover that when they appreciate each other, get along and work together, they create a beautiful picture that’s more interesting and complete

Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Abby

I am not sure if this is the type of thing you are looking for, but right off the top of my head:

1. Before reading - Have students fold a sheet of drawing paper in half. One one side let them draw a picture (perhaps a park scene or something other type of scenery) using only one color. After reading - Have students draw the same scenery using many colors. Discuss how the picture changes and how it is better and ore interesting just as the book suggests.

OOPS! I misread. I thought you wanted activities to go with the book. I should read more carefully. If you could be more clear that would be great. Other than read aloud I am not sure how else you might do it. Could this book be made into a reader's theatre where several students played the role of the crayons?
