6th Social Studies Center:Where to start?

I have decided to do centers in my 6th grade social studies class with my advanced students first. I want to see how well this takes off. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it started? I will need at least 6 centers. One will be a vocabulary one, the rest, I'm still up in the air about. I teach world history. Well will be covering China, Hebrews, and Judaism soon. I'm tired of the same old boring stuff!! I'm hoping this will work!!

Do you want centers that you can just tweak for each unit?

One of the ways I used to organize my content was using the acronym GRAPES - Geography, Religion, Art and Architecture, Politics and Government, Economics, and Social Structures

So, you could maybe do:
G - Map center
R - research/coloring/matching of gods/goddesses
A - use playdough or other building materials to recreate famous art/buildings
P - have "scenarios" that students have to make decisions on using the old laws
E - recreate money, trading routes, sample products
S - research families/clothing/traditions - paper dolls with costumes

I'll be really interested to hear other replies and what you end up doing!

Thanks! That's a great idea! I may use some of those. I teach Science AND Social Studies. I will be flipping back to science next week, so I may try some of these ideas with science as well. I will keep you posted when we hit back into s.s in a few weeks!!

Ancientciv- I love your ideas with using GRAPES as centers! I might have to use this idea in my class as it's getting old and students are becoming restless!!

I have been trying to come up with some ideas in order to implement centers into my resource class...GRAPES content can help me stay focused on the content areas needed to be reviewed.

Thanks!
