book recommendation: characters changing in book
Old 02-05-2011, 09:47 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am teaching a unit on character traits and character development and I'm looking for some recommendations of books where the characters go through a change from beginning to end. (2 books I have are THe Grinch.. and Christmas Carol). I am sure I've read a hundred of these books, but I am drawing a blank. Any ideas would be helpful. I'm looking for shorter books I can use during shared reading, not really long chapter books.

Thanks.

Sue

A few ideas

Here are just a few quick ideas: Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Frog Prince, Pinnochio, Leo the Late Bloomer, Enemy Pie, Seven Spools of Thread, Wolf!, The Frog Principal, a lot of fables would work since they teach a moral. I hope these ideas help jump start your thinking process.

"A Fine, Fine School", "Ruby the Copycat", and "Me and Uncle Romie" could be used in a study of character.

I use them more for my 2nd graders, but his books have great characters who go through some sort of a change from beginning to end. Chrysanthemum, Shelia Rae the Brave, Lilly's Big Day, Wemberly Worried...
they all have lessons too. I love his books and my students do too!

If you're looking for more of a chapter book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is an excellent one for character change.

This year I used the books Julius the Baby of the World and City Green to teach that concept.

I second the Edward Tulane book. It has amazing character change throughout the whole book.

"The Summer My Father was Ten"by Pat Brisson, "The Royal Bee" by Frances Park and Ginger Park, and "The Memory String" by Eve Bunting are FABULOUS for character change! My 2nd graders always ask me to read these books several times. (Lots of tears at the end of "The Summer..." book.)
