Wmp?

I just went to my second training session for WMP/WMV. The starting point they recommened for Kindergarteners was an investigation of the materials. I had not used WMP at all until November, so I allowed the children to manipulate the "ones" or "units" and make observations, and then manipulate/observe the "tens" strips. We then compared the two. ...both were a square shape...the "ones" had only one square, the "tens" had ten squares...color... At this point I introduced the terms for both. This is all I did on day one.

Had I started at the beginning of the year, which I will do next year, I will tie it into the number of days in the school year. Day 1 building up to the last day.

Hope this helps.

100's place value straws.

I begin place value first day of school. I have a place value pocket chart. The students add one straw per day. After 10 days, we bundle the straws and move them to the tens pocket. We count by 10's and then 1's. The chart has a place for the number above the straws...so we count how many 1's and place the number above, and then count how many 10's and put that number on top...this shows the place value relationship.
I also add a penny a day...and the students learn to recognize pennies and dimes right away...we trade in 10 pennies for a dime, and count the $.
I also use 10-frames...# of 10-frames filled = 10's place...extras = 1's place.

My advice for you as a Montessori teacher is that we have great success in out field teaching from our materials. Go to Neihaus Montessori Materials or Montessori n Such. These Companies have great materials for you to buy on their web sites. They will help you to teach the placement families. Good Luck!

Place Value cubes

I also used to use straws but this year I switched to unifix cubes. I feel this has been much better. The kids can easily see the cubes build to a set of 10 and the tens are easier to count. The bundles of straws are more difficult to see the 10. I also use base 10 blocks so that the kids can build the numbers themselves when we start teen numbers. They make a 10 with 10 singles and compare to a 10 rod. Then they show 14 with a ten rod and 4 singles. Later on we build and count by 10's to get 100 flat.
