Phone upgrade (do you have to turn your old one in?)

Grrr! DS just told me his cell was stolen out of the weight room at school. (He forgot it there and went back after school and it was gone) The phone is older now, and keeps shutting off (I hope the jerk who stole it has fun with the crappy phone!) and he is overdue for an upgrade. We were hoping to get up to the Verizon store this weekend to upgrade it for him. BUT now....I guess no upgrade for him, since he does not have the old phone? Do they take it? I think they do, but can't remember. We have a few old phones lying around....so maybe they don't.... Anyone know for sure?

You keep your old phone (it's yours) and just buy another phone at the '2 year upgrade' price. He can get a new phone without turning one in... your other phones can be kept in case someone loses one or sold.

Definitely get the insurance, it's worth the $7 a month. I dropped mine in an ice storm this winter, and the whole screen shattered. It cost $90 to replace it. Without insurance it would have been $400.

I just upgraded at Verizon and you don't have to turn in your old phone. In fact, my last two I've sold and pretty much made back the upgrade price because I always keep the box, and all the manuals and extra cords.

Did you call Verizon and report it stolen? I always imagine the worst and worry that they could rack up a huge bill for you.

You can turn in your old phones at the verizon store and they pass them on to a charity for those who need phones but can't afford newer ones. You can also check in with the verizon buy back program. If they're really old phones, you won't get any money, but if they're newish you might get a few bucks.
