ELMO Projector vs. Smart Board?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello! I was thinking of purchasing an ELMO for my classroom. However, administration brought it to my attention that my classroom is being considered for a SMART board. I already have an LCD projector, so that is not an issue.

So, my questions are:

1) Which would/do you prefer? Why?

2) if I get a SMART board, is it even necessary to purchase an ELMO? Or would you suggest I use the money elsewhere? (that is sounding really nice to me).

3) what are the pros and cons of both?

Any other advice is welcome!!

sort of. I have an ELMO that I use to project worksheets, or class math activity sheets, etc. I also have what they call an Airliner which is like a smart board. It has portable pad that I can use around the room instead of being tied to the front of the room. I can hand it to students to do the things others need to stand at the board to do. (if that makes sense) I use both so I can see the uses for having one of each.

I like both. I use them for different reasons. Not interchangeable in my mind.

I have both. I use both daily. Before I had scanning capabilities from our copier to my pc, I used the elmo a lot for worksheets or displaying other papers. Now I can scan directly from teh copy machine so I have a digital copy of all papers.

Both. Two totally different pieces of equipment.
The ELMO is an invaluable tool for peer moderated marking and providing formative feedback.
The SMARTBoard does many, many other things but it does not easily project student work.

I use both daily. I use the ELMO with the SmartBoard. I project the worksheet/book/whatever through the Elmo onto the Smartboard and then I can write directly on the Smartboard onto the worksheet. (I hope that made sense) I'd want both.
I've used the SmartBoard for powerpoints, and review games that I've made. We also play HMs vocab games through Eduplace on the SmartBoard. The SmartBoard has so much more that you can do with it, unfortunately, I've only tapped into a small portion of its capabilities.

Hope it helps,
Tulips

I have both. If I had to choose, I'd keep my ELMO in a heartbeat! It's so immediate. I can take student work and immediately project it for the class. I can project the book we're reading or a diagram we're analyzing without scanning it in. I can put math manipulatives beneath it and project them, zoom in on details. My students recently did oral presentations and we were able to project some of the smaller items they brought in so all could see. When I'm going over an assignment using the Smartboard on a page I've scanned in or a pdf, when I try to move scroll down the page, I have to clear all of the writing I've done before I can scroll, but I don't have to do this with the ELMO. My Smartboard is good, but I LOVE my ELMO!

I have both. I rarely touch my ELMO.

If I want to show something right then, it takes just a few seconds to scan it into a program and use it on the SmartBoard.

I'll take my SmartBoard any day.

and a SMARTslate. I use it all the time! I can use the SMARTnotebook software with it. I googled and found our workbook pages on line so use it to project them on my whiteboard. With the slate I can interact with the images. I also have a disk with all our Math on the computer. I would choose a SMARTboard--definitely.

Just a suggestion...I have been reading a lot of positive comments on the IPEVO document camera ($70). If you get one of those you can have both! If you have not heard of the IPEVO do a search right here on PT and read what other teachers who have used it said about it.

AND an airline SMART tablet. I love all three! I use them all of the time. As others have said, the ELMO is immediate. I don't have scanner in my room that I can scan student work into, but I can just grab someone's essay and slide it under the ELMO to do a class edit/revise on the spot. I have the ELMO software on my computer that is connected to the SMARTboard, so students can write on the SB or tablet (airliner) and it looks like they are writing right on the worksheet/paper that is being projected through the ELMO. I would be very disappointed if I lost either my ELMO or my SB. I could live without the tablet, though, if I had to choose one to give up.

I'm currently using the IPEVO document camera, and I love it. It's very easy to use, lightweight, and folds up very small.

Interesting. My tablet would be the last thing I'd give up!
