I am looking for a poem, it is called: "I Am Determined To Be Somebody Someday". The author of the poem is W. Herbert Brewster, who pastored the Trigg Avenue Baptist Church in Memphis, TN.

I've tried to be someone
But no one will help,
So I'll try to be fun, one
Who giggles and yelps.

I'll read pretty poms, see
Instructive and rare;
And hope someone phones me
To tell me they care.

Thank you but that is not it...
but I like this one too

The verse has about 7 or 8 stanzas

"The present conditions and dark circumstance
may make it appear I have not got a chance
.... I am determined to be somebody someday

DETERMINED TO BE SOMEBODY, SOMEDAY

The present conditions and dark circumstance,
May make it appear that I have not a chance;
The odds may be against me, this fact I admit,
I haven't much to boast of - just a little faith and grit,
In spite of the things that stand in my way,
I'm Determined to Be Somebody, Someday.

There's no royal blood a-coursing in my veins,
No great family background for me remains.
I haven't had a chance as others have had,
But, it makes no difference what folks think or say,
I'm Determined To Be Somebody, Someday.

Some may think that I have made a poort start,
Well, maybe I have; but I'll handle that part.
At the end of each round, I'll be on my feet,
For there's something in Me, that's hard to beat;
The fight may be tough, but I'm in it to stay,
For, I'm Just Determined To Be Somebody, Someday!

My head may be bloody, and my skin may be red, white, brown or black.
But Nothing shall throw me off the track
I'll climb the ladder, round and round
Until my feet strike higher ground
And when I do, just remember what I say,
I'm Determined To Be Somebody, Someday.

thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Believe it or not my cousin is the pastor of the church where Brewster formerly presided, and he has been impossible to catch up with. I used to have my students recite this annually for Black History month and/or Kwanzaa. The original actually has 7 stanzas and the last stanza you provided did not mention red, white, brown skin, but living in Nevada I like the modifiction. When my cousin sends me the original I will make sure to send you a copy also. Again Thank You Much!

Im Determined to be Somebody! The current conditions, and dark circumstance, may make it appear that I dont have a chance. The odds may be against me, this fact I admit. I havent much to boast of, just a little bit of faith, and a whole lot of grit. In spite of the things that stand in my way, Im Determined to be Somebody, Someday. Some may say, Ive made a poor start Well, maybe I have, but Ill handle that part. At the end of each round, Ill land on my feet for theres something in me, thats hard to beat. The fight may be tough, but Im in it to stay, for Im Determined to be Somebody, Someday. There are really some things I would like to know. There are certainly some places I would like to go. There are surely some things I would like to see, and Theres something special that I would like to be. Let others do as they will or may, but as for me (Humph)! Ive just got to be Somebody, Someday. As a member of a once downtrodden race, to the courts of heaven Ill appeal my case. I know that God is the judge on the bench- Though men will try and lynch. My head may be bloody, My skin may be black. But Ill let nothing throw me from my track. Ill climb that ladder, round by round, till my feet strike- higher ground. And when I do, remember the words that I say--- Im Determined to be Somebody, Someday!

My 4 year old son recited this poem twice, once for the mayor of the town where he attends school and where I teach, and then, at a Christmas Gala......... He did a wonderful job, he has the poem down packed, now we are going back to my home church Wednesday night for a Black History Program, and he is going to recite it again along with the poem I am the Black Child. We are certainly keeping black history alive in my house!

Until my feet strike higher ground;
And when I do, just remember what I say,

Thank you Dr. Bruster!

I was raised in Memphis by a family friend of Mr. Brewster. They were both from Somerville. We attended Pilgrim Baptist Church where that poem was read at every Children's Sunday. I remember being at his funeral and the gathering at his home afterward when I was 11. Didn't think I'd ever hear that poem again. It was so inspiring to me as a child and even more so now. I'm glad you found it. Good luck on your search.

I attended Pilgrim Baptist too as a child and recited Dr. Brewster's poems - "My Best," "The Cry for Freedom Now," "Loose the Man and Let Him Go," among others. My Daddy, the late Deacon Ananias Boyd, was the chairman of the deacon board at Pilgrim. So often Pilgrim is omitted in references to Dr. Brewster. Only East Trigg is mentions. It is so good to have someone who attended Pilgrim come forth. God bless you.
