Questions about Caddie Woodlawn

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Scholastic Books has this book in their February issue that I'm just now getting around to sending in. I'm thinking about using this as one of the book club books for when I do our Westward Movement unit. I've never read the book, so if you're familiar with it, could you tell me if it's a worthwhile read for fifth graders? Does it only interest the girls? Also, it seems like I remember hearing the title in the past with the name "Caddie" being pronounced with a long a sound as opposed to a short a. Is this correct?

I've done this book with my 5th graders and they all (boys and girls) seem to enjoy it. I think they do because it's easy to read and understand. There's action and adventure even with the main character being a girl.
I've always pronounced Caddie with a short a.

I'm anxious to add this to our Westward Movement collection of book clubs books. I ended up ordering five of them, although I probably should have gotten a couple more. Now I just have to read it to prepare my book talk; I want to make sure the boys know that they might find this interesting as well.
