Any strategies on how to get first graders to write their names on their papers? A lot of them forget to write their names on work and they we have to spend time trying to find out whose paper it is...

I couldn't even begin to tell you. My fourth graders still don't remember to put their names on their papers. I rip up their papers and they still forget the next time around. It is a big issue in my classroom!

I remind my class when I hand out sheets that the first thing they should do is put their name on it. When papers get handed in without names I put them on the Mr. Nobody pile for 2 days then they get trashed. Sts who show me work with no name are asked if Mr. Nobody did the work and usually rush to correct the problem.

If you are all doing the activity at the same time I can help... at some point during the worksheet (or whatever) tell the students to draw a smiley face next to their name (or any other simple drawing). They want to draw that smiley face so they will check the name spot and add it if it isn't there.

As for center work....I can't help you there

tune; "If You're Happy"....teach it the first week of school, soon, as you start to sing it, they'll join, the next month they'll start to sing on their own, while writing their name on the paper.

"The first thing on my paper is my name (clap clap)
The first thing on my paper is my name (clap clap)
Mrs Smith needs to know
Who did this work and so
The first thing on my paper is my name."(clap clap)

Another idea - attach highlighters to the basket where they hand in their work, and they can highlight their names. First grade loves to use the highlighter, so if the name is missing they'll go back and put it on. Or let them keep a highlighter in their pencil box for this job.

wouldn't go over that big in fourth grade but I like the highlighter idea and the smiley face idea. Thanks!

Highlighters

we have done in the past. This year I looped with my students and if they forget their name they owe me 5 minutes of recess because that is how long it takes me to figure out whose paper is whose. Nobody likes to miss recess. They each had a turn on missing recess at least once and most of them never again. It works!

Good luck!

Everytime we do the same
We pick up our pencil and WRITE OUR NAME!

I start the chant and the kids finish it. That has helped tremendously.

I have a chant as well. It goes like this:
Put your name and number on your paper,
Put your name and number on your paper,
Put your name and number on EVERY single paper,
Put your name and number on your paper.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The 4th grade teachers say they still have to remind their students!! At least I try!! Good luck. Lauren

Harsh but effective

I always remind them in the beginning of the year to put their name on their paper. Once in awhile I will say that if someone doesn't have their name on their paper I will rip it up. The student must get a new paper and start over. I did this one time and haven't had students forget the rest of the year. I learned this from my master teacher back when I was student teaching. It is harsh, but very effective.

Ripping the paper

never helped in my classes, I tried it.
I just keep reminding them. I even remember subbing in a high school senior year government class and one of the students, an honors student, forgot her name on her paper. I guess it will happen no matter what the age.

A teacher at my school uses this strategy. She has them highlight their name on their papers before they turn them in. She keeps the highlighters near the place that they turn in their work. She says it works well with 2nd graders.
