My crate seats

Wanted to share these - I made them to go into my 1st grade classroom. Due to the suggestion of a friend, I used bath mats on the top. I have a monster-themed classroom.

I just hot glued the bath mats on. My dh cut the boards for me, then I just traced the size of the board onto the bath mat.

I know - I wish I could take the credit for the bath mat idea, but it was really my friend's idea. So glad I went shopping with her that day!

Thanks!

Those are so cool! I love the bathmat idea~they almost look like carpet pieces. Ribbons are the perfect embellishment! I'm sure your kiddos will love sitting on those!

Your crate seats are very cute. Did you stuff them?

The ribbon adds a creative thread to the seats.

Very nice and colorful!!! I use chair cushions BUT I think the bath mats are cheaper!! Would they unravel on the edges? If you put the seat on the open side of the crate then you can use the crates as storage!!

I like your ribbon idea! I used some red fringe with the little balls and attached it across the top edge with a hot glue gun. I'm doing the circus/carnival theme, and I wanted them to look whimsical! Just another idea!

Ok, here are the step by step instructions:

First I put the ribbon through the center. Used a lighter on the edges to seal them.

Next, my husband cut board for me for the seats (to fit inside the open end), since I want to use them for storage. The cut has to be pretty exact to fit on the lip inside of the crate. I did check with my local hardware store, and they said they would cut it for me. (Back up, just in case dh couldn't do it!)

Then I traced the boards that he cut onto the back side of the bath mats. When I cut them, quite a bit of the carpet pieces fell out. I pulled all of the loose ones off of the pieces I was using. I was a little concerned that more would fall out, but the rest of them seem to be in there very tightly, so fingers crossed on that one.

Then I hot glued the rug pieces onto the boards. I started with the center, and then went around and did all of the edges.

Lastly, I glued a piece of ribbon across the top, to use as a "handle" to get the lids on and off.

Hope that's helpful!

What a terrific idea. It lead me to think that maybe you could also use carpet samples. You know what I mean. Those carpet squares that some teachers use for sitting mats? I wonder if that would work and maybe some stores would donate them.

My local carpet place did! It was for a math jumping game I once made for summer school. They were very happy to donate the out-dated styles, rather than throw them away, and only wanted me to tell people who asked where they came from!
