This year I am really focusing on test prep with my 3rd grade students. What are some effective test taking strategies you teach your students when practicing for upcoming testing?

1. Box the title of the story.
2. Number the paragraphs
3. Underline the first sentence of each papragraph.
4. Circle any words that are in italics or bold print.
5. Underline or circle any captions under pictures.

I also have instructed my students to read the questions first (most still did not do this during testing) - deciding if the questions is going to be one of two types.

Right There -Mark RT - all the information will either be right there in the question itself or right there when I read

Think and Search - Mark TS - this means that I will need to think and search the text as I read to be able to go back to prove the correct answer from my choices.

My school uses the Comprehension Toolkit - which teaches the students strategies to use as they are reading- Monitoring Comprehension; Activate & Connect; Ask Questions; Infer Meaning; Determine Importance; and Summarize & Synthesize. There is a whole separate section on Test-Taking as it is a complete separate and different genre of reading...............

Ms. J,
I use this website as a teacher's resource.
http://www.charliefrench.net
I print off all of the lessons for reading/lang 4th grade, but they can be adapted down to 3rd. I haven't done any of the math, but I am sure they are good too. Each lesson has a focus on a specific strategy (like looking at the questions before reading the passage) and uses fiction, nonfiction and poetry passages.

Another site that some of our teachers use is brainchild.com

I tried the link and it did not work, so tried .com rather than .net and it worked!

Thanks!
