Opinion writing

We are to begin the year with opinion writing for second grade. Anyone have ideas or websites that may provide some creative, fun ways to teach opinion writing? In the past we started with journal writing and then friendly letters.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Peace,
OhioTeach

Model, Model, Model...I can totally see a bunch of kids just saying "I like" or "I don't like" and then that is it. I would spend a week on writing opinions as a class.

You might want to look at book/movie reviews online and see if there are good opinions to use as an example.

Maybe have your students write...

Play two different types of music and write your opinion on why you liked one better
Read a book and give an opinion

I just noticed that the sample unit for 2nd grade from the newest version of Lucy Calkin's writer's workshop is opinion writing letters. They write a letter to a company that they like.

You can download it for free.

I like to model this with a topic I know I will upset them with, like why video games are a waste of time.

2ndGradeMama- that wasn't the unit I was thinking of, though it's good.

Lucy Calkins has a unit here: http://www.heinemann.com/shared/onli...NG_sampler.pdf

but it's actually a first grade unit. I was thinking of doing it anyway, since I know they didn't have that unit in first grade!
