Cute Writing Projects for the start of the year

My team members and I are starting to plan the first piece of writing our students will do this year. We operate in a writing workshop (sort of) style. Basically, we present the project and then spend at least few days working on each part/skill needed for that piece. We give mini-lessons and we also have the students work together to help one another on their writing. There is a lot of collaboration between the students and with the teacher. However, they each of the same type of project (i.e. favorite summer memory, my family, etc.).

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have some good ideas for our first one: both topics and/or a creative way you publish/display the final product. Thanks!

I have an old, very old, graphic that I have used for years for a baseline writing sample. This fits how we teach and prepare the kids for the state testing. It's time for me to use something new and this fits the bill perfectly! Thanks again!

Is exactly what I was looking for for the first week of school! I think as another writing project I am going to try is "The New Student from the Black Lagoon". I am going to integrate these rather easy books for 5th graders into mini lessons to describe organization and voice using the 6 traits method. At the end they are going to write their own book to share at back to school night later in September. I did this project with my second graders last year but with a little tweaking thing it will suit 5th graders too!

ABCs of Me Booklet

Clip to ScrapBook #12

This summer I came up with an alphabet book all about a student. I asked many teachers for ideas for the prompts. for example, I am most Proud (P) of the time I ....

Laura Candler is an online friend of mine, and asked me if she could turn my idea into a booklet. You can print her version as a front to back booklet. visit her website and look for the ABCs of Me.
