Does anyone have a different idea for capacity other than doing the gallon man? I'd like to do something, but can't think of anything.
Thanks.

Try the "Big G"!

I LOVE IT! The kids LOVE it also!

Have students take out a sheet of paper and draw an enormous G using up the whole page. Explain that this is the gallon.

Then have them write four Qs to fill up the gallon(4 quarts in a gallon).

Next, have them fill up each Q with 2 Ps(2 pints in a quart).

Finally, fill up each P with two cs(2 cups in a pint).

If you'd like, you can have them fill up each cup with an 8(8 fluid ounces in a cup).

It's visual and helps all of my students.

Hope this helps!

I use a saltbox and different containers. At a center the kids manipulate by adding salt from one container to the next. They fill in the blank with the correct answer. They love doing it and it helps them remember. I also use the BIG G. It is easy to visualize.

We call this the "Land of Gallon." It is the same idea but we tell a story. The Land of Gallon has two Queens (qts.), each Queen has a prince and a princess (pts.) and each prince and princess have two children (cups). The kids seems to remember how to draw the diagram by retelling the story.

We are starting capacity next week. I love the idea of the Big "G" and the "Land of Gallon." What cute ideas and good visuals for the kids! Can someone tell me what the gallon man is?
