Hi All!

I am looking for a poem/song to help my students remember to change y to i before adding -ed which is what we are working on right now. If anyone knows a website I could look at or has a poem, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much!

We do actions when teaching this. When doing whole group lesson, we all spell the word aloud, but when we get to the part of the word (the y) where you change the y to an i, we do the following:

Raise our arms in the shape of a y (like YMCA song). Bring our hands/arms together above our heads to form an i. Then, as we say, "and add 'ed'" (or whatever suffix we are doing), we keep our arms together, and bring them down in a swiggly motion. ending with hands at our chests.

We all chant the word aloud, together. We all do the actions together, then we finish writing the word, together. It sounds like it takes a long time, but it really doesn't. We then move right on to the next word.

We have done "When more than one, no need to guess. Change y to i and add es." Not sure if you can change that to fit your needs.

I snap my fingers to a beat and have the students say:
When a word (noun) ends in y
change the y to i
and add es

They love it and always remember it. They do not always apply it during work but I will ask them about words that end in y and they rap the song.
