Anyone have fun, effective ways they teach main idea and supporting details, cause and effect, sequencing, or drawing conclusions??

Main Idea

I have students try to find the Main Idea in songs. I play different songs and they try to find the central idea and then details in the lyrics that support the main idea.

The kids love it - just use appropriate songs for school!

CCrawford- what a great idea! Do you happen to have a list of songs that you have used that work well and are appropriate? Thanks in advance!

List of Songs

I know I used pretty popular songs last year. I am trying to recall from memory...I know I used
1.Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield,
2. Boys of Fall by Kenny Chesney,
3. I'll Be There for You (Friend's Theme Song)
4. That's What Friends Are For by Dionne Warwick
5. Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
6. American Soldier by Toby Keith
7. Let Them Be Little by Lonestar
8. You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift

I presented a few of them and we did it together with a Main Idea graphic organizer. Then, they did it in small groups with ipods and laptops. For homework, they had to do this on their own. Might want to be careful with this on as one of my students chose Bedrock - I don't think he really knew what the song was referring too.

House

I read somewhere (probably on this board!) that a teacher taught main idea/supporting details as a house. The main idea was the roof and the supporting details are the rooms that live under it. It was a visual that really helped my kids. Maybe you could read a holiday book or article and have them draw and illustrate a holiday main idea/supporting details house.

Another idea...last year someone had suggested teaching similes and metaphors using a Katie Perry song. This worked very well for me and it turned out that the students sang that song in Chorus-connections all around!
