We are working on long division and I am looking for a website that shows them step by step what to do. We do the divide (dad), multiply (mom), subtract (sister), bring down (brother) and sometimes remainder (Rover) to help them remember. Some kids are getting it but others are lost. Any ideas???

White boards are great and expensive. Go to the lumber yard buy a sheet of smooth white paneling. ---called white tile board…. Our lumber yard cut it up in smaller sizes free. (about 11 by 12 inches) don't remember for sure. Or maybe your high school shop teacher will cut it for you. Next with sand paper sand around the edges just enough to take off the sharp edge. A boys top of a sock ---makes a good eraser. You need a white board, a white board marking pen and sock top for each student. Teacher gives a math problem, spelling word or whatever. When student has an answer they hold up the board. You say correct erase or try again. Our boards get lots of use.

I teach them short division. Same steps--dirty monkeys smell completely bad (Divide, multiply, subtract, compare, and bring down) except they don't bring down, they "move over." And they don't show the subtraction, just place the remainders next to the number that would have been brought down. They get it much better. It is hard to explain over the internet.

This looks like it is something I will try. We go to the computer lab this week, so I'll let you know how it goes.

I am in the midst of this. We have been working for 4 days and most FINALLY have it!!! They did ok with the one digit quotients and even with remainders, but when I threw in the 2 digit quotients they freaked out. I can't even tell you how many problems we have done on dry erase boards!!! I finally gave them 10 problems to do on paper and I had several 100's so I felt real good! We use Does McDonalds Serve Cheese Burgers. I think I got it from this site a few years back. The biggest problem mine face is knowing what to do once they've gotten teh first digit in the quotient done. They don't know what to divide the second round. It really does take knowing the facts and practice, practice, practice!!!
