I will be teaching my first novel unit - Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh in a departmentalized setting of 5 classes of 30 in each (fifth grade) class.

I would love some suggestions on how to start. I was thinking about assigning chapters to be read independently and would love some ideas on what else to go along with the actual reading.

About how long will it take to complete the book (over 200 pages)?

Any help, ideas, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I hope to start the book i n April.

I have not done hat particular book with 5th grade but have done several others. I would suggest you mix it up with how the material is covered. If you havethe means to havethe audiobook thatcwould be one way. They love following along. Reading outloud, with someone, popcorn, silently are all good. I use trifolds quite often with novels. Just search and see if you can find a trifold for this book already made. I also do mini projects, respond to reading letters, comprehension questions, group comprehension reviews with generic question cards, vocabulary practice, etc. there is a tremendous amount of resources out there. Just do a search nd see what you can come up with.

Youvlook at one. Try finding the one for Charlotte's Web. There are 4 trifolds for this book. I am using one per week and the amont of skills being covered is unbelievable.
