Morning Work Ideas???

I'm student teaching and it is my responsibility to have morning work for the students for when they arrive in the morning. These are usually fun activities that the children can complete after they unpack. I use story starters a lot and have some worksheets, but I really want these to be fun, but somewhat educational worksheets. Any creative ideas or websites, which will make this daily procedure easier???

Thanks.

My kids do 2 math problems from our series and then do a half wkst of DOL (daily oral language, 5 questions). After they finish that, they either do a fun sheet or free write in their journals. I have a 15 minute span of when kids arrive, so I try to have a lot there for the early arrivals.

We do 5 problems for DLR (Daily Language Review), 5 multiplication problems, cursive letters practice, and a Spelling Fun sheet. I use ehelper.com to make puzzles using our spelling words (wordsearches, unscramble the words, fill in the blanks).

survey and graph

Have a question on the board such as "What is your favorite kind of ice cream.... chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry?" Have the students survey 10 (or whatever # you feel comfortable with) students, then make a graph showing their results. Make sure to provide graph paper. (The 1" kind is great in 1st grade)
You can adjust this to meet your needs. Then have 3 questions they must answer on the back of their graph. These could vary depending on the grade level. For first grade I would ask:

Which was the favorite ice cream?
How many more liked ______ than _________?
How many children liked ______ and ________?

You can do this several times with a different question each time.
My kids loved this activity.....

I use the same basic routine each day of the week;
Monday-write spelling words 3x each to take home to study
Tues. -write a sentence with each word
Wed.-spelling worksheet
Thurs.-unscramble the spelling words
Fri.- spelling test

I add various worksheets and practice problems to these activities.

On Friday they copy a poem from the board and place in a poetry notebook which they keep all year. They must draw and color a picture to go with the poem. There are lots of things for which you can use this poetry.
