Smart Board

I was wondering people's thoughts were about the smart board. I taught a math lesson on part-part-total to a kindergarten class. It was a very fun tool and I think they will really change teaching. Although, smart board allows interactive learning it was hard to control behavior when working with a new exciting tool for the students. Any ideas or experiences with this?

our school was able to receive SB's for all our classrooms a few years ago--that first year, the students (and i teach 6th) were all in awe--and we spent lots of time getting them to learn how to manipulate things and use all the buttons (that they needed).

now they are all old-hats and help the new kids who are unfamiliar with how to use it best. they still enjoy using the smartboard and very much appreciate all the visuals that go along with it.

so, no, no experiences with off-task behavior (due to SB)--you also have to perfect the art of using the board (as a teacher) while turned sideways so you can see the kids, and so they can still see what's on the board.

good luck!

Smartboard excitement

Good question --- When my class received our Smartboard we were all excited and just wanted to see what it could do. So before I ever started teaching with it, we played with it. Whatever came to our mind --- we went to the gallery to see what was there, we pulled up websites, played games, etc.

I guess my thought is to let the students play to help get other the newness of it so we can get down to business of learning and having fun!

I have used an interactive white board for the past two years and love it. My students are very comfortable with it and since I use it a lot as a "chalkboard" they don't see it as something different. It is fun when they have figured out some applications for it that I don't know. I am still learning all that can be done on the board. I really don't get any discipline problems while using it.

I have a SMARTboard in my class. It's mounted on the wall, so the kids aren't bumping it. That makes a big difference. Next year my LCD will be ceiling mounted, and this also will make a huge difference. I think I only had one instance where I had to discipline the children while using the SMARTboard. Once that happened, I never had any problems with it. The kids love it.
