I am looking for a new book and activity for Thanksgiving. I have done Legend Of The Indian Paintbrush, Molly's Pilgrim, and A Cranberry Thanksgiving. Don't get me wrong both books are tried and true but just looking for something different. Any suggestions would be great!!

Try "An Outlaw Thanksgiving" by Emily Arnold McCully. Based on a true story about Butch C and the Sundance Kid. It's a good book to introduce historical fiction as well as author's point of view.

Pilgrim Thanksgiving by Hays is tried and true...and accurate, using actual pilgrim names.

My third graders and I love The Night Before Thanksgiving (or maybe it is called The Day Before Thanksgiving). It is about a field trip to a farm where there are turkeys.

My favorite thanksgiving story is Eve Bunting's book "A Turkey for Thanksgiving." I wish my old laptop hadn't died because I typed up a reader's theatre for it years ago. It has a surprise ending and would lend itself to using all the questions the core suggests too.

A fun to read, nonfiction account of the woman who tirelessly worked to get Thanksgiving declared a national holiday.

Thank you for the readers theater. I love, A Turkey for Thanksgiving.

I going to check out the units on TPT too.

I am going to read Jim Arnonsky's All About Turkey and discuss real turkey facts. We will also make a turkey call using a plastic cup. You just thread some string though the cup and pull the string from the inside. The cup echoes the sound and it sounds like a real turkey. The kids love it.

Happy Thanksgiving

is hilarious and fun. The turkeys have a coach training them but Runt knows why he is trying to build them up. So he stays little and weak... it is adorable.

That one is my favorite. It also has great vocab, rhyming (which seriously challenged some of my K-1 kids last year), and amazing artwork inspired by great works like Van Gogh's Starry Night. And it follows the conventions of "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (aka 'Twas the Night Before Christmas...) all the way through, so they'd be fun to compare with older kids.

The author is Dav Pilkey.

I've been reading the Junie B. Jones book about Thanksgiving....Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten. It's funny, the kids always love those books, and it's about being thankful for what you're honestly really thankful for (in the story, things like their stuffed animals or rainbow sprinkles).

Turkey Craft

I used this craft for spelling, but it could be used for reading as well with any Tgiving book you choose. Pics are on my blog.

Instead of spelling words the feathers could be story elements. They could color code the tips to show what element it is.
