Phonemic Awareness Grade 4

Taking a grad class and looking for a simple activity to address phonemic awareness in the upper grades. I was going to do word sorts... does anyone have any creative ideas for doing word sorts in whole and small groups? Do you use any particular books?

Thank you!

Words sorts would be phonics-- which would also be helpful, but phonemic awareness is strictly the ability of children to hear sounds/ take apart words/ rhyme/ etc... with seeing the word in print.

I've read lots of stuff that says that older kids do sometimes still lack phonemic awareness and cannot move forward until someone fills in this gap.

All of the research I have seen says that phonemic awareness instruction should occur in Kindergarten and mastered by 2nd grade. I think it would be hard to have activities for the upper grades. If a child cannot hear and manipulate the sounds in words by the 4th grade, he/she has a serious reading problem.

With that said, you could look at this website for ideas for teaching all five components for early literacy

Good luck!

This site has center activities for grades 2-3 but perhaps you could modify them.

Orton-Gillingham

Orton-Gillingham (OG) is for phonemic awareness and is used to remediate children with dyslexia, regardless of their ages. I would try to get a hold of sample OG lessons to use in the upper grades. You can try the Academy of Orton-Gillingham, the Neuhaus Education Center in Houston, Tx, Susan Barton, or the Shriners. These organizations or people are known for having excellent dyslexia programs that serve people with dyslexia from childhood to adulthood. Also, check out Susan Barton's website. You might find something there.
