Charlotte's Web / Fair Fieldtrip

We always start the year reading Charlotte's Web (3rd grade). We live in an area that annually hosts the oldest agricultural fair in the country. I was thinking it would be fun to go visit on a field trip and focus our attention on the pig exhibits. I was thinking I could easily tie in math ahead of time with schedules and money (we do time and money to start the year). I also thought maybe we could do some kind of writing project while we are there.

Any ideas?

I think that's a great idea for a real life experience related to the book. I always do this book and have a worksheet that is about math. It is packed away, somewhere, since I left my position at the end of the year, but it was something about getting $10 and spending as much of it as possible buying things at the fair---there was a list of foods, rides, and souveniers. You could maybe make up your own based on actual prices at your local fair.

I lways read the descriptive parts of the fair and then I have my students draw a picture of what they see at their county fair. then I have them write a descriptive paragraph. We try to use really descriptive words like the book does. This is always one of my favoite writing projects.
