Some of us in my school are piloting Words Their Way this year. I teach in a 2nd and 3rd grade school and I'm actually excited about trying it. I'm all for trying anything that will get at the heart of issues. Our 4th grade says they've had success with it.
I was using Words Their Way before common core and I continue to use it. There are three main reasons; the ability to differentiate spelling instruction, the prescriptive systematic way to teach spelling and the foundation it gives all readers.
We use the Fountas and Pinnell phonics program. I don't love it but there are some really great center activities, games and homework ideas. It also has word sets that we copy on hardstock, cut out and use for word sorting. We also use the F& P reading assessments for our running records and for leveling our libraries.
