I like to use the Kissing Hand. Then I have the students trace their hands and write to their mom why they love them on each finger. Save these for back to school night.

I also like to read "YOu are Special" by Max Lucado. First writing assignment: you are special because... This makes a great classroom book!

How to be a perfect person in three days.....

Great book to talk about making mistakes but trying your hardest and being yourself!

The Very Important Book. We read the book and then make a class book following the form of the book, but inserting our names and why we are important. The kids do their own page and illustration; they really get into it. Then I have it out for Back to School night and the parents just love it!

I always start the year with Frindle and follow up with BFG-Big Friendly Giant. Both make great read alouds and then follow up with discussions.

Dear Mr. Henshaw

I am tinkering with the idea of Dear Mr. Henshaw to teach daily journaling for the year. Its a good easy read and there is a lot of discussion that the kids can relate to.... having a hard time thinking of topics for writing, divorce, social issues, etc...

Hello Everyone,
I found this adorable book on building character and success called Inch and Miles the Journey to Success by Coach John Wooden.
The inchworm and mouse embark on a journey visiting various animals building a pyramid for success including: hard work, enthusiasm, loyalty, cooperation, determination, alertness, action, self-control, fitness, skill, team spirit, confidence, poise, and doing your personal best.
•Activities:
1.discuss why each particular animal was used for a specific trait
2.cooperative groups-order the traits in order of importance
3.write about the most important trait and/or decide if another trait needs to be added to the pyramid

Please share any additional ideas for this book.
