Hi there, I know many of you are doing classroom economies, and was wondering what you do for the class store part of it. I like the idea of doing a large sale just a few times a year, but wonder if that is delaying the reward too much. I know there is no way for me to do weekly store time, but need some sort of happy median...possibly after each progress report / report card...which would be every 4 weeks.
I also am curious as to what you sell. Usually I pick up some trinket type stuff and do some coupon items. Bubble gum and bubble gum passes were real big with my kids last year.
I would like to involve parents more, though...does anyone have a letter they send out asking for donations and volunteers to "man" the shop? I would be interested to hear how others handle this part.
I don't have a letter requesting items. It is on our supply list at the beginning of the year. This is my first year doing an actual "economy". I have done several "watered down" versions in the past. Here is the introductory letter. I am far from finished with it so I guess this is a sneak preview. It is a lot of work getting this stuff together, huh? Good thing we started in advance!
Let me know if you want copies of anything else I have so far (money, coupons, etc.). I would love to hear your ideas!
I "open" my class store after each progress report and report card...which is about every 4-5 weeks. I do sell pencils, pens, grips, and small trinkets. However, most of my larger items are things that don't cost me any money...bonus points on a test, homework pass, lunch with a friend, extra recess pass, extra computer time, office helper, library helper, etc.
Thanks so much! I also have done watered down versions, and am trying to come up with something that does not take an inordinate amount of time.
How do you all handle depositting money into the bank? I have done it where we only deposit right before the store, and also had the bank open every morning. I didn't like the way either worked. I am toying with the idea of totally running on a bank system rather than dealing with money.
I am attaching what I have done so far. I am not sure about the "bank". I am currently planning on just keeping a daily tally chart of debits and credits and then writing the paychecks based on that. The students will have to cash their paychecks in full or keep the paycheck to be cashed in the future. I don't think I am going to do any "record keeping". I have gotten all of the students wallets that will stay in their notebooks. This is where they will have to keep their paychecks and/or money. I am also attaching my money. I think that, since it is 2nd, I am going to stick with 1s, 5,s and 10s. Anyway, let me know what you think...any ideas for improving?
Oh yeah, the paycheck is something that I got from someone else (maybe Newingham...not my creation) and just adapted for myself.
There is another post discussing the use of cutesy vs. realistic money. Someone posted this website for printing realistic money. http://www.moneyinstructor.com/play.asp
It looks great! I may do away with the jungle bucks...or maybe not.

I allow my students to cash in their money at the "bank" once a week. I do this when I had out their weekly signed papers. I give the students the bucks that they have earned for the past week, and they have an opportunity to trade in smaller bucks for larger ones. It does not take long at all.
Did you see the attached money bucks that were posted by trianna00? She has created them for many different themes and they fit on one page. I thought this may help. I'm using a star version for my movie themed class.
I hope this one opens for you. I got it from trianna. She created these in microsoft publisher then converted them to word. So this should open for you.
Oh My Word!!! Those are awesome. Definitely replacing mine with those. Thank you sooooo much for sharing. OK - I may be pushing my luck, but did she have 10s also?
Adorable!!!
