I will be doing an ocean theme in my classroom. I would like to think of creative names for my reading groups. I will have 4 groups. I wanted to do something more than just call them "sharks, sea horses, dolphins, etc. Any suggestions?? Thanks for helping!!!

OH what ways you could teach language with this!!! I taught 1st grade for 3 years and found they can do alot more then we give them credit for. Just name them dolphins, sharks, etc and then after about a month or so have the kids help you rename the groups adding descriptors.

For example "The Daring Dolphins"

2nd semester keep adding use a verb.
"The Daring Dolphins dove"

Last nine weeks make it into a super sentence.
"The Daring Dolphins dove deep into the ocean."

Hope this gives you an idea.

The first thing that came to mind when you said 4 reading groups was "There is 7 continents and 4 oceans and you're is going to 4 groups for reading!" What about nameing your 4 groups after the 4 oceans?!?!
1. Atlantic
2. Pacific
3. Indian
4. Arctic

I would go with the Oceans too. Then ask them to become experts and learn facts about their ocean, and give a report. If you switch the groups later, they could vote on a specific animal to study.

different types of sharks, whales, fish, etc. For example, if you went with the shark theme you could have: hammerheads, tigers, great whites, threshers, etc. Does that make sense? It would be a good way to do decorations on their folders, BB, etc. because you can easily find pictures of these online.

I do fish groups in my classroom

The groups I use are Marlins, Dolphins, Rays, and Sharks. There are several other names you could use but I think some of them come with a negative connotation so I didn't use them. For example: Whales makes me think of someone fat .

I have table signs that hang over each table with the group name and a fish that is representative of each type.

Anyway, I love it and so do the kids. We found it interesting that no matter who sat at the Marlins table, they were always well behaved. I have no idea why but it was interesting each time we moved desks to see if sitting at that table made it difference and it almost always did.
