First Day Presents

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Does anyone do a present for their students on the first day? I remembered an idea from a few years ago, but didn't save the instructions. It was something like a smartie because you are so smart, an eraser because we all make mistakes...I can't remember the rest.

Welcome Bags

Clip to ScrapBook #2

I prepare a "Welcome Bag" for each student on my roster (plus extras for new enrollies). I usually use a ziploc baggie but this year I found small white paper sacks that are just perfect. After I put the items/goodies inside the bag, I staple the following note to the outside:

The items in this bag have special meaning:
*The cotton ball is to remind you that this room is full of kind words and warm feelings.
*The chocolate candy hug is to comfort you when you are feeling sad.
*The tissue is to remind you to help dry someone's tears.
*The sticker is to remind you that we all stick together and help each other.
*The star is to remind you to always shine your brightest.
*The gold thread is to remind you that friendship ties our hearts together.
*The penny is to remind you that you are valuable to our class.
the toothpick is to remind you to "pick out" the good quailities in your classmates.
*The bandage is to heal hurt feelings in your friends and yourself.
the eraser is to remind yo that we all make mistakes, and that is OK.
*The lifesaver is to remind you that you can come to me if you need someone to talk to.
Smiles,
Mrs. McClellan

I hope this gives you some ideas.

Clip to ScrapBook #3

In the past I gave the students a pencil and welcome bookmark. This year I have made a welcome bag with some of the following ideas I got from PT:

A starburst because you are a star in this class
Laffy taffy because we’re going to have fun
A hug because everyone needs one sometimes
Smarties because you are so smart
A pencil because we're going to work hard
An eraser because everyone makes mistakes

This “Caring Cup” contains helpful items to get you

started off to a great year in second grade!!!!

A pencil to help you think and create.

The rubber band is to remind you to stretch your imagination to the fullest.

Remember no mistake is so big that it can’t easily be erased.

A word of kindness is a lifesaver.

A lollipop to keep you sweet, for you will be respectful to other kids you meet.

Save your chocolate kiss and give it to a friend when you see they need some encouragement.

One shiny coin. To me you have great value. There’s nothing you can’t do.

A Star to remind you to shine and always try your best.

Second Grade Kit
Eraser- Because its OK to make mistakes
Smarties- Everyone is "smart" at something
Penny- Everyone is valued
Sticker- We stick together in second grade
Bookmark- We learn many things by reading in second grade

In my bag I put a smartie, a pencil, a bookmark, and an eraser with the above sayings.

This year our classroom theme is Star Students. The welcome gift consists of a star student pencil, star student bookmark, and star student eraser top. At the end of the day (depending upon my prep schedule) we may have a little celebration with punch and cookies or cake in the shape of a _______- you got it- a star!

I am going to give the kids some lucky charms with the lucky charms poem that has been posted on PT this summer. I also think I'm going to make magic playdough.
