Novel Study

I will have a group of four to five fifth grade students that I will be doing a novel study with. One of the children I pull out for the gifted program and he is reading on a ninth grade reading level. I am guessing the other children are above grade level, but not that high. What would be some good ideas for a novel study in this instance? I am grateful for suggestions! Thank you!

Sometimes, it's good to focus on

the author's craft within a book and not just look at the reading level. I love Sharon Creech as an author. She covers many topics and has such a terrific style. The book Wonder raises a lot of questions. We just finished Kizzy Ann Stamps which is fabulous and raises a ton of issues. Both are close to 5th grade level.

I agree that, at this age, reading level should not be the focus of a novel study. I would do an interest inventory for the whole class and choose a young adult novel based on their interests. I like doing novel studies that have cross curricular connections.

Here is a link with some suggestions:

When I judged the ELA fair, the fifth graders had done projects on Spy Camp, The Fault in Our Stars, Maleficient, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I guess they were interested in reading books for older kids.
