I teach all levels of K-5 both reading and math. I meet with every grade level between 35-45 minutes each.

I work with K-5th graders. Kindergarten students I work with only during RTI time. We use a computer based intervention and all kindergarten students are in my room for about 25 minutes. The classroom teacher is in the room with me so that we can pull students off of the computer intervention for additional support in other areas.

With 1st-5th grade students I pull them for 30 minutes five days a week when possible. Occasionally due to schedules students will miss one day in a week. I only pull one group at each grade level due to the fact our school's so small (only 25-45 students in each grade). Additionally, I have RTI groups for 1st and 2nd graders which consist of the lowest students in that grade level. Typically these are the same students I see for Title I with occasionally a few extras. My first year I also had a Junior High group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders but haven't had one assigned to me since. If they try to add in one this year I have no idea where they will put it because my day is pretty booked.

During RTI I work on both reading and math primarily with computer based programs (so that I can work with groups of 2-3 on reading while other students are independent). My school district only offers Title I reading so outside of RTI we only work on reading.

Heidi, that sounds like a big job!

Lillybabe, your situation sounds similar to mine! I don't see students every day unfortunately

I just started my first year as a K-5 reading teacher. I am so, so overwhelmed! I don't know where to start or where I'm going haha but I am learning SOOOOOO much already. Excited for that aspect of it. I am going to know so much about teaching reading by the end of the year!

This is my second year as a K-6 Title I reading teacher. I see small groups from each grade level each day for 25-30 minutes as well as two RTI groups each day.

I didn't feel like I had a clue last year...this year has been much better!

I program and place all student with teacher teams for Walk to Read (RTI tier 2 and enrichment). Myself and 2 aides push in during those times. I push in only to Kinder and 5th My aides are at all grade levels because I am also responsible for data review, meeting as a member of the instructional leadership team with all teachers once a week for collaborative team, Friday morning leadership team meeting, and biweekly TEAM (special Ed) meetings Myself and my aides then do tier 3 intervention every grade daily for a minimum of 35 minutes. We service 98 students in tier 3 daily. Reading only

Interesting. Thanks for the responses everyone! Keep posting! I would love to hear more tips. There's not many of us in each school so it's always helpful to hear what other people are doing!

Unusual Assignment

Clip to ScrapBook #17

I have taught for 16 years mostly Title but my most recent is one of the oddest. I am a Reading Specialist with Springfield (MO) Public Schools. My "work site" is inside a private school located inside a long-term residential behavioral health facility. I have students from age 9 through 18 typically for 6-9 months some less some more. My students are mostly from Arkansas but we also have those from Nebraska, Nevada, Montana, Florida, Hawaii, South Carolina and I am sure I am missing someone. At any time I might be serving students from 15+ states. I am one of two public school employees, the others are hired by the facility. We do not have a principal.

We do NOT participate in state mandated testing (Thank God!) as it would be a nightmare to train to administer for multiple states. We do a test called the Kaufmann when our students enter and prior to discharge. As part of my job I look at their Kaufmann results if they are 1-2 years below where they should be I test them. My initial screener is the San Diego Quick Test of vocabulary words in isolation. If this one confirms the Kaufmann scores I go on to give the DRA2.

I do both push in and pull out services. My "typical" student is 13-15 years old reading on a 2nd or 3rd grade reading level, though as to be expected I have every extreme. Last school year, I had a 19 year old who came to me knowing most of her alphabet and three words. When she left she was solidly reading at a Level F (approx Level 10-12). It was incredible to see the world open up for her.

Hi, I just recently began teaching Title I after teaching 5th grade ELA for almost 27 years. I work with K-4 students in small group situations. I am enjoying it and hope to finish my career in this position.
