I have a new student from Mexico who has only been in the states about 1 week. My ESL teacher can not take him daily so I'm at a loss as to what to do. I know colors and numbers and that's it for my Spanish. I have alphabet sheets for each letter and very simple phonics stuff--he is 3rd grade. Is this the best place to start?

What about Math class? Are numbers taught the same in both languages? I don't mean to sound stupid but I am clueless.

relax. be yourself and continue with your lesson plan.
this is my suggestion,
at the end of every session ask the student what he/she understand or not in the lesson.
then from there you will realize what is needed for you to do, to be able to make the student understand and follow the topic.you can seek the help of your superiors. having a foreign student in the class happens very rarely. it is a surprise on your part, so your superiors will not expect much on you, i guess.
