Student Binders

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some input. A friend/colleague of mine suggested I create binders for my 4 students in my pull-out classroom that I see 3 times a week for a half hour at time. I think this is a great idea! I am looking to include comprehension strategies, vocabulary words, spelling lists...etc.

Does anyone use binders in any of their classes? What do you have the students include in theirs?

Thank you!

Hi, one thing I would include is decodable reading passages focusing on different letter patterns: ight words, ie, ue, soft g, soft c, r controlled vowels, gn, kn, wr, dge, vowel teams, silent e, ou, ow, oi, oy, au, aw, oo, psy, ph, sc, ch, sh, th, wh, and augh and ough and tion, cian, and sion words. Just a minimal amount of instruction in these word parts helps them feel stronger with reading. I also like Scittarelli Spotlight and Science Doodles on Teacherspayteachers because I firmly believe that EVERYTHING needs a picture for ESL kiddos!

What grade are you teaching?

Hi thank you for replying!

The group I would use binders for includes a 2nd grader, two 4th graders and a 5th grader. Thanks for all your input!

I pull different grades for different subjects.
The only group I use binders for is writing. In each binder my students have:
1. alphabet chart
2. sight word lists
3. shortened sight word list
4. Fab 5 editing checklist
5. Ideas for writing
6. Sentence starters (I see ______, this is ________, There is ________) for emergent ELLs
7. Word families
8. Picture dictionary that students create themselves and then add vocabulary as they learn new words. I also encourage them to use these words in their daily speaking and writing.
9. Finally, the binder is sectioned off based on the writing units: opinion, information etc.

I hope it helps!
