Place Value Games

I have my students play the game Race to the Flat with a partner.

The students roll one die and count out that many units from base 10 blocks. They continue rolling and trading in groups of 10 for 10 sticks. The winner of the game is the first person who can trade in for a 100's flat.

I'm not sure if I explained that very well, but hopefully you get the idea.

Kim Sutton also has a book, Place Value with Pizzazz, that is filled with fun games. You can find it at www.creativemathematics.com

place value game

I play this game with my 5th graders (The goal of the game is to get the highest number possible)
1. Number index cards 0-9 twice each (for a total of 20 cards)
2. Put students in groups of 2
3. Give each student a sheet that has the number of place values you want them to learn (ex. _ _ _, _ _ _, _ _ _ if you want them to know through the millions period)
4. Make sure they can't see each other's paper
5. Partner 1 draws a card and decides which position to put the digit in
6. Partner 2 does the same
7. Play continues until all positions have been filled
8. Partners compare numbers to see whose is greater
* This game helps students become familiar with positions, value of numbers in those positions, and comparing numbers
*Students have to be able to reason that if they draw a high number (ex. 9) they should put it in the position with the greatest value and if they draw a low number (ex. 0) then it should go in the position with the lowest value.

That was a quick run down...if you have any more questions let me know

Try mathwire.com and go to the alphabetized list of topics. There are several entries on place value with many activities and games.

Math Their Way has a great activity involving numbers of different bases. It gives kids good practice regrouping. You start with base 3 and tell the kids that you are going to count a new way 1,2, Zurkle, 1 zurle 1, 1 zurkle 2, 2 zurkle, 2 zurkle 1, 2 zurkle 2, zurkle-zurkle. The kids have a two sided piece of paper (place value board) the left side is for the zurkle or tens the right side is for the ones. You ring a bell or give a signal everyone puts a counter on the right side of the board-they read the board "zero zurkle, 1 one" you ring the bell again, the kids put another counter on the ones side "0 zurkle, 2 ones." When you get to a zurkle they either put the counters in a cup and move to the other side of the board or I often use unifix cubes that can be snapped together. Once you get to zurkle-zurkle the kids subtract one manipulative each time you ring the bell until you get to 0 zurkles, 0 ones. The next day you do the same activity with base 4 (1, 2,3, fliver, 1 fliver 1). The kids have fun making up names for the new number each day. By the time you get to base 10 they understand regrouping. If this sounds valuable to you but doesn't make sense find a primary teacher with a copy of the Math Their Way teacher's guide. I did this with First Graders and many of them really understood how regrouping worked-others at least had rote experience with the concept. It's proabably better suited to slightly older kids.

Who has? cards are a great and fun way to teach/review place value. Try the following website for the cards and directions.
