Reading Specialist

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am contemplating going for the reading specialist certificate (Texas). It will take me two years to complete and the course titles are leading me to believe the work is theory based and won't really help me in the classroom.

If you are a reading specialist, was your program theory based, or did you find you gained knowledge to help your students struggling with reading.

I am asking because I don't want to become a reading specialist if I won't learn how to help my students.

I am looking to hear if any specialists out there truly found the classwork beneficial to your teaching, or was it just done in order to gain a job.

Thank you for your information.

I have a MA in both special education and reading. I found reading helpful because it taught me strategies to teach my students and some great assessment tools.

It depends on your program. I did learn how to help my students, but it was just the start of my teaching. You will always have to read academic journals to stay on top of research.

The trick is to be able to understand how to apply the theory to your practice. I love that part.
