The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn

The Kissing Hand is a book about a little raccoon named Chester who goes off to school for the first time. Since he is a bit nervous, his mother gives him something special- a kiss in the palm of his hand. Anytime he misses his mother or is nervous while he is at school, Chester only needs to hold his hand up to his cheek and feel his mother's love. This is a great book for the first day of school- especially for kindergarteners! Supposedly Teacher's Helper Magazine from '99 has some related worksheets.

For math my students will be copying and extending patterns made out of heart and handprint cut-outs. They will also count out hearts to match to the appropriate written number.

For literacy, they will put story sequence cards in their appropriate order (one of the other teachers in my school provided me with these). They will also be contributing to a "Kissing Hand" class book by making a handprint in the middle of a page and sticking a heart-shaped sticker in the center of their handprint. At the top of the page they will complete the following sentence: "This is ____________'s kissing hand."

There are many WONDERFUL activities online if you search. Some great websites that have activities are:

Good Luck!

We do lots of different things but the ones we always stick with are having them trace and color their hands onto a piece of paper that has part of the words from the story, "The kiss will jump from your hand and to your face and you will remember, Mommy loves me." or something like that (I don't have it here). They color it and put a heart sticker in the middle and then get a hand-print sugar cookie I've made that has a small heart cut out of the middle. You can find the hand and small heart cookie cutters at Walmart for about $1 each.

Here's a fingerplay idea for you.

Raccoon, Raccoon

Raccoon, Raccoon, ( make a mask around your eyes with your fingers)
Up in a tree, ( both hands raised )
Raccoon, raccoon, You can't see me. ( cover eyes )
Raccoon, raccoon, I can see you ( one hand on your eyes, one pointing out to an imaginary raccoon)
Eating fish and corn and birds' eggs too. ( imitate eating)
Raccoon, raccoon, hunting at night ( squint eyes )
Raccoon, raccoon, sleeps in daylight. ( sleeping motion).

I have also given you an attachment- a 'Word' doc. My fonts will probably not be the same as yours, so it might be a bit scrambled with your page setup.

Hope this can work for you and that I've helped. Be Smurfy!

Try Sunny Lane Learning for a Kissing Hand unit. Totally comprehensive and more than enough ideas to last you a month! I heard about it on one of the message boards and got that and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Good luck!
