Assuming you are departmentalized - what do you do the first few days of class? My class periods are 50 minutes and I'll be teaching reading. TIA

I'm doing a few things. Of course, there is the first day going over all the paperwork and intro stuff.

After that, I'm doing this cute post it activity. There are several different topics about school. Each table will get one and then each student answers on their own post it. When all four are done, they will work together to write a collaborative answer.

Then, I'm going to try this art activity we learned at the end of last year. It's called Trompe'l'eoil. It's a very simplified version (mainly because I'm just not that artistic - ). I plan on having them write an "I Am" poem to use for the activity. I'm probably not making any sense, but I can show you a picture if you want.

That should take me a day or two to start off, then I'll get into Geography and our Mindset to Resiliency Lesson.

In the past I've had them do a "Fakebook" page, their intro essay, and last year I had them create this activity where they created four social media pages to tell about themselves.

Hope that gave your some idea.

Luv

I would do some sort of interest survey, to help me select books throughout the year.

Also one on how they learn best - I'm sure there are learning styles ones on line, but even something simple like:

I work best when:

It's very quiet ------- there is a little background sound -------- it's noisy.

The lights are dim ------------------------ the lights are bright.

I'm by myself --------- with one partner ---------- in a group.

Explain and do examples for any special bulletin boards you have, too - ones the kids contribute to, like quotes, book recommendations, etc.
