Happy New Year!
I am going to introduce a unit called Animals in Winter and am wondering if anyone has any book recommendations or projects they can recommend? Thank you!

One activity that I did with the kids was a hands-on activity where students put a crisco-covered glove in a bucket of ice cold water. I talked about how animals have layers of fat that keep the warm. The kids talked about it all year!

Whale migrations

This is an exciting time for all Australians and kids in schools here alike. We love our beautiful and precious humpback whales!! People come from all over the world to go on whale tours anywhere up the Australian coast. We also have our very own adorable whale called 'Migaloo' who has been migrating for decades and has his own website. http://migaloo.com.au/

Everyone looks forward to his journey especially and we all pray he is always stays safe when he heads back to Antarctica.

A lovely book to buy is The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson:

Here's a sample of online info and resources for you:

So many mapping and other such activities to create, design and enjoy!

Hope that helps.

smart board lesson

My favorite hibernation activity I do with my kids is a self made smartboard lesson based on the book " Mrs. Frizile Sleeps For the Winter" I opened a smart page and pasted a dress and lots of different animals from clipart. The kids come to board and either drag a picture of a hibertating animal onto the dress or put an x on one that does not hibernate. I have kids do this activity 1st before reading the book then again after.
