Do you still teach Science and Social Studies? With the CC reading books, there is so much Science and Social Studies content. We were thinking of just combining Reading with Science (and Social Studies). Does everyone still teach these as separate subjects?

I've been retired for a year, but I taught them as separate subjects. However, I taught units, maybe a science unit, then a social studies unit, rather than teaching both subjects every day or even every week. Also, I integrated the unit topic into my language arts instruction.

In our district we have a social studies program that has been blended with ELA and focuses on the local native american tribal groups and is aligned with the CC. It replaces specific parts of the HMR ELA program. We also have aligned our Science program with the ELA as well. We do not have enough time to teach SS or Science as individual units. The focus at our grade level is get students up to Basic before they leave Second Grade. The vast majority of our students come into Second at FFBB!.

This is mostly due to socio-economic factors and lack of attendance in K or First grade.

Our primary level teaches science and social studies as separate subjects. We teach social studies during the first and third quarters and science during the second and fourth quarters. We also integrate a lot into our ELA so that the students are getting more.

Thank you for responding. We were discussing blending in Social Studies and Science with ELA, also. We thought it would be a way of saving time; technology is making a lot of our subjects take longer to complete. Do you still give a separate Social Studies and Science grade?

I was required to give report card grades for science, health, and social studies, but they were only participation grades.

We still teach Science and Social Studies separately, but we combine the grades as one subject.

Some of our schools have a Science class taught by a specialist like what is done for music and gym. The students will be expected to pass the state Science test. Science is also taught with science kits that have labs, experiments etc. Science could be combined with Math and/or reading then. They make a lot of different graphs and tables in Science, measure things, follow directions. The kits come with books that go along with them too. These are FOSS kits.

Our science and social studies is blended in with our reading. We choose stories where the subject objects can be covered through our reading curriculum.
