watch his original I Have a Dream speech. We talked about persuasive speech and how he used intonation and repetition to make his point. They noticed he was passionate and confident in what he was talking about, so we discussed why that was important when trying to persuade someone.

I then had them write their own Dream speech and record it. I'll post the videos for parents to see. Their speech had 5 sentences they had to complete and write 3-4 sentences about.

I have a dream that the world...
I have a dream that my country...
I have a dream that my school....
I have a dream that my family...
I have a dream that I...

It was interesting to see what their focus was, especially with our country and the election.

Some years I've done packets with short articles from enchanted learning one has a timeline, poem about him (can't recall the title) and we traditionally watch the great movie My Friend Martin. I believe is now available on youtube.

And then some form of "I have a dream..." project for the hall display.

great DVD called My Friend Martin that is how every year. It is a cartoon movie with real video clips from his life. It's voiced by amazing people, and every year opens up amazing discussions with my 3rd graders. I don't know if it's on Youtube, but I recommend it.

Super cute video on you tube about MLK from Kid President. It initiated a great conversation in my room about making positive change.
