"Clean" Grade 9 novels

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I teach at a very religious private school (not Christian) and am on a search for a novel for Grade 9. We are very limited in what kinds of things can be read in class. Don't get me started on the problems with this, it is what it is....

The novel can't have:

romance or sex. platonic boy/girl relationships are ok
major religious themes especially if not monotheistic
a lot of rudeness or swearing, or themes of disrespect to parents etc
a lot of emphasis on technology/modern clothing/music/entertainment

As you might expect, my students are more easily entertained than most, so it doesn't need to be the world's most thrilling read. I do need something with a fair amount of literary value. We read Steinbeck's The Pearl, for example, and Orwell's Animal Farm.

Any bright ideas I might not have had yet? I'm very nearly at my wit's end.

What about books dealing with racism? I ask because Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a very good book.

Another book might be My Brother Sam is Dead but to find one at a 9th grade level with the parameters you need is going to be difficult. I'll keep thinking for you

I did a unit on The Hobbit for 8th graders at a Christian school, and I think it would work for 9th too.

Check out Progeny Press. It is a Christian company that makes literature units. You might get some inspiration there.

Edited to add:
I just went to check out what they have. Even they don't meet your criteria because of the no romantic relationships, rudeness, and swearing. Even The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn or Tom Sawyer is going to be crossed off your list!

find some old readers digest books? there are hundreds of modified titles in those. novels from the last century? seriously you may have to scroll back to the 1950s to find titles, but even then they will likely be below 9th with those parameters. I worked in a KJV-only school so I can relate.
