Words their way help

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I started with 6 groups. I did an assessment and now I have 8 groups because of kids who mastered the list and those who didn't. I'll attach a picture of my groups. I have 6 groups in the yellow book. One in orange and on gifted kid in green.

1) how do you assess?
2) at what percentage of wrong words do you promote or keep at same list?

Three Groups Only...

In my district, we are only allowed to have three groups. More than three groups is all you can handle.

Special ed students are not included in these groups. The special ed dept. uses a different spelling program if it is written in the child's IEP.

I would advise you to keep the gifted child in that group, and the orange group as another group. The 20, 21, and 27 can be another group, and 12, 13, and 15 are another group. If students are at the top of their group, give them a few more challenging words that meet the sort's objectives.

A step forward is a step back

That's what our teachers college consultant told us. She said it's not individualized instruction. You can change the work within the groups for the highest. Let him generate some of his own higher level words using the same pattern. Make sure the top group understands the vocabulary and not just the pattern. Have them apply the patterns to new words.

Another thing is that we were told weekly spelling tests weren't necessary. I only give weekly test to my lowest group to give the parents more feedback/motivation to work on the patterns at home. It makes things so much simpler in the classroom. I do informal assessment of the rest. They put all their words into a container and take turns reading them while the others write them on slates. I can tell at a glance which groups need more time with a sort.

Hope this was helpful!
