Thanksgiving project?

I know it is early but I'm looking for a project or craft to do based around thanksgiving. In Sept, we make apple pies, in Oct we do pumpkin math, then comes Thanksgiving and I never have anything.

If you do something in Nov I would be very interested to hear about it.

Thanks Barb

Thanksgiviging Feast

If you really want a craft maybe scarecrows or cornucopias. My favorite activity is a Thanksgiving Feast. I join with another class for the Feast. One class makes pilgrims hats (1st graders) and we make Native American Vests with the symbols (2nd graders). We do a Native American study in 2nd so it connnects and both grades do a general study of the first Thanksgiving, etc. We make "original" type foods. We have homemade applesauce or cranberry sauce, butter (heavy whipping cream and a little salt in clean jar and shake away...refrigrate), cornbread (I explain that theirs would not look quite the same), and popcorn (kernels in popper machine). We make a popcorn cornucopia and read the popcorn book. It talks about how the Native Americans introduced the pilgrims to popcorn and how they made it. We have ice tea (plants) or juice (fruit) and talk about what the N.A. might have used to make these. (We often talk about no milk (cows and pigs were brought over by settlers, etc.) They love the Feast and parents are usually willing to volunteer to help because it is a little Thanksgiving party and fun. I hope you love it as much as we do.

I think I saw this idea on this site before. The students had a cutout of a turkey and had to disguise it so it wouldn't be killed for Thanksgiving dinner. Does anyone have directions for this?

Charlie Brown Feast

I tell my students that we're going to have a Thanksgiving Feast. They get all excited. We talk about what their Thanksgiving Feasts look like. They could even write about it.

Then I pass out popcorn, jelly beans, toast, and pretzel sticks and they are super confused. I put on the movie, "Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" and it is so cool to hear them when they realize that this is the feast the characters have in the movie. The love it!

Wendy 1....

I use the poem If Turkeys Thought

If turkeys thought, they'd run away
A week before Thanksgiving Day,
But turkeys cant anticipate,
And so there's turkey on my plate.

I give them a coloring page turkey. They take it home to decorate. Add cotton balls to look like a sheep. Add leaves to look like a tree. Dress him like Santa. Etc.

I also do a turkey book report. They write a problem and solution on feathers. Then they glue to feathers to the turkey. On the belly I write the title and author. I like to use a story with multiple problem and solutions so they have several turkey feathers.

gave me a copy of a menu and then meat, fruit, veggies, grains, and desserts....She has cut outs of each...it's got to be from mailbox or something like that. Anyway, the kids try to figure out how many different combinations they can make and then write about their favorite. One of our science objectives deals with nutrition and this also deals with math ---plus, it's fun!

Kym

I'll try to find out where she got it!
