Last year I taught 7th grade ELA for the first time, I've always taught elementary. I never felt like I was doing enough because there was not a good curriculum. I would like to see what you do to teach vocabulary, word parts, grammar and comprehension. Thanks in advance!

use? I am new to middle school English but have a teacher in our school who previously taught it for years (she's semi-retired) who is giving me pointers. I will be going through the vocabulary words each week, stressing the syllables and pronunciation. Students will make flashcards for homework that include the word, definition, pronunciation, synonyms, and antonyms. They will have pages to do on their own also.

I taught 5th grade English last year and had a Daily Language Assessment in which students had to correct grammar mistakes in the sentences. I found this very helpful.

Hope this helps! If you have other questions, let me know.

ELA middle school is a bridge to the independence needed in high school. I'd suggest looking at my state blueprints, standards, scope and sequences. There are links to items you can use. http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/...sh/index.shtml

Open the PDF for grades 6-8 and then see the hyperlinks at the right side bar.

Greek and Latin Roots is a great way to tie in vocabulary and grammar. Literary terms and figurative language terms could also be implemented. Proofreading is a good way to review grammar concepts. Short stories, student novels and informational articles are used for comprehension and CC standards. Best of luck!
