Vocabulary HW or Classwork

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi there!
I am in search of a more updated way of doing vocabulary. I am considering spelling city since we have devices in the room, but then it cannot be done for HW since not all students have access to tech at home. I had done graphic organizers on handouts for students to do at home for that reason. I feel they need more rigor and choice.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

I like the new Wordly Wise 3000 vocabulary program and added it to my wishlist for the upcoming school year. We'll see if its in the budget!

Spelling City

I like Spelling city, too. I always send home the login info with suggestions (like, our local library has free computer access). We also do it for 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a week, depending on the day.

I might pick 2-3 big idea vocab words for homework practice. That way you're doubling up on the most important concept.

Corbett Harrison's website? I LOVE his "vocabulary collecting" and logophile lesson which introduces the vocabulary notebook! My 5th graders love this and rise to the expectations. He teaches a bit older kids, but with a couple tweaks my kids do just fine! It is not something you could really do on chrome books or iPads but that gets done in composition notebooks. But boy my students impress me! I won't do vocabulary any other way. The best thing about this method is that these are words the kids pick.

Yes, I still do some content words and spelling/language families or spelling rules a bit, but that isn't really vocabulary now is it? The above are words that will go in their vocabulary and not just be learned for a test or to help them spell better.

Choice is Good!

There's no reason you can't include spelling city as long as it is not required. Simply make it one choice in a list of ways to practice vocabulary that incorporates several different learning styles. Students could also choose:

Fill out charts
Illustrate the words
Use the words in sentences, stories, poems...
Do a word hunt (keep track of the words they read or hear outside of class)

Getting the families involved is a great tool as well! Encourage parents to hang the list on the fridge and use the words at home.
