Writing Revamp -Gretchen Bernabei?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I teach fourth grade reading and writing, and responsible for both the STAAR tests for each subject. My district does NOT have a writing curriculum, just pieced together. Writing is not my strength and I am wanting to create a writing curriculum to help me help my students become better writers.

I was told by a fellow teacher to buy books by Gretchen Bernabei and all would be well. I have not heard of her before, which isn't a surprise as I only recently began teaching reading and writing again.

Is anyone familiar with her work? Is it easy to implement?

If not, does any one have suggestions? I don't mind paying for materials (out of pocket) if they really work, progress made, and testing STAAR results improve.

Thank you!

I have used some of her stuff that another teacher passed along to me, and it was all engaging and helpful. I probably only had bits and pieces, so I don't know if she has more of an entire program to follow or not.

My district has a writing consultant that we hired to write our ELA curriculum for us, so we have to use that, but I still pull some of Gretchen's activities in also. You might try her "Crunchtime" book, but she has several.

By her is great! She also has a website. My favorite writing teacher, who also presents with Gretchen, is the teacher with the website Texas Teaching Fanatic. She has a ton of stuff on her website, Facebook page, and sells wonderful products on teacher pay teacher. Her name is Kayla Shook.
I have been teaching 4th grade writing In Texas for 26 years! Oooffff, I'm getting old! But she is great!

I like Gretchen Bernabei and her friend, Barry Lane. They know their stuff. The only down fall is that a lot of their teaching is narrative, which does not always comply with STAAR. I really love Empowering Writers. They have everything and are great for writing expository compositions.

As far as mult. choice, I would highly recommend Jeff Anderson. He has written several books all of which are great. My top suggestions would be Every Day Editing and Revision Decisions. They are absolutely fantastic.
