Next year I'll be teaching a combined 4/5. It has been several years since I've taught a combined class. I'm wondering the best way to go about teaching math to a combined grade. I know there are some students are not able to work independently, at least at the beginning of the year so I'm not sure they'll be ready to use a workshop model, though I'd like to try it myself. I will have 28/29 students and the room isn't large.

Does anyone have a tried and true system for differentiating and teaching math to a combined grade? We have access to one ipad and one computer at best tech games isn't a reliable station. I'd like to structure my blocks so that we are doing fact fluency as well as problem solving (math journal) on a daily basis. I'm open to any tips or ideas!

What math series will you be using? I did a 3/4/5 combo with everyday math. I did it in rotations - math boxes, game, and work with teacher. Since most lessons involved all 3 components, it worked fairly well.

Oh man! That makes it harder. I've taught combo grades the last four years, but our whole school is smaller than you're projected class.

Some things that work for me when I had only two grades have been:
* one rotation was Rocket Math for fact fluency and Math Boxes for review work. That rotation was about 20-25 minutes
* the second rotation was teacher time, this was their formal lesson with me. Again I did 20-25 minutes for this rotation
* after both groups had both rocket math/review and teacher time, then I had about 10-20 minutes for desk work
* afterwards I had 20-ish minutes for math games and/or homework head start.

I have a 90 minute math block daily.
