Combo Class Help!

Hi teachers!
Have any of you had experience teaching a 1st/2nd class. I've taught both grades, but never together. I am very concerned about the firsties getting enough attention without ignoring the 2nd graders! Any help would be appreciated! TIA!

I taught that combo several years ago, but it was before common core came about. Writing I taught whole group as a workshop and included mini lessons that applied to both. Then I expected more form the 2nd graders and conferenced with individuals/groups while they wrote. For math, you may be teaching multiple curriculums! I assessed mine to find holes and grouped them accordingly, but nowadays it would be harder with common core! With reading, I did it similarly to how I taught writing and did small groups. You can make it work!

Mini lessons and tiered work

I think you'll find it works similar to differentiating a regular classroom. I wouldn't spend much time teaching whole group. I'd choose needed instruction to benefit all for whole group mini lessons and then do differentiated small groups and stations. Perhaps teach 1/2 class lessons while the others are doing other work, if needed.
